This blog is aimed at those who love to cook simple home made food with minimum available ingredients.The style of recipes in this blog will be mostly Dakshina Kannada (Vegetarian) home made food. However I intend to share recipes other than authentic Dakshina Kannada cooking which include cuisines from Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Punjab...There is also something for those who like cuisine from across the sea.

Tender Jack Fruit Palya

Tender jack fruit palya is an authentic Udipi /Mangalore dish. It is one of the most looked forward dishes during summer season when jack fruits are available in plenty.


Ingredients:
1 small tender jack fruit
1 cup fresh grated coconut
1 table spoon tamarind
1 tea spoon jaggery
1/2 tea spoon haldi
1 spoon urad dal
6 red chillies
2 tea spoon mustard seeds
1 strand curry leaves
2 table spoon oil
1/2 tea spoon hing powder
Salt to taste

Preparation:
1. Apply oil to your hands before cutting the jack fruit to avoid sticking
2. Peel the outer skin of the jack fruit and the center of each piece.
3. Finely cut the jack fruit into very small pieces.
4. Put the pieces in water to avoid turning black
5.Drain water from the pieces and put it in a cooker vessel.
6. Add water just to soak the pieces , tamarind pulp ,salt, jaggery and pressure cook for three whistles.
7. Grind coarsely coconut , 1 tea spoon mustard seeds and 5 red chilies with out adding water.
8. Heat oil in a thick bottom pan, add mustard seeds, curry leaves, 1 broken chili,  urad dal and hing .
9. When mustard starts splitting add the cooked jack fruit pieces and add salt if required
10. Add the ground coconut mixture and mix well.
11. Cover and cook for a minute.
12. Serve hot with rice..
