Ammana adige mane in Kannada means mother's kitchen. This blog is aimed at those who love to cook simple home made food with minimum available ingredients.The style of recipes in this blog will be mostly Dakshina Kannada (Vegetarian) home made food. However I intend to share recipes other than authentic Dakshina Kannada cooking which include cuisines from Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Punjab...There is also something for those who like cuisine from across the sea.

Varan is a very healthy, homely food . It is a light and easy dish prepared using tuvar and moong dal. Varan along with steamed rice makes for a comfort food.

Ingredients: (serves three)
1 cup tuvar dal
1/4 cup moong dal
2 table spoon freshly grated coconut
3 green chilies
2 pods of garlic
1 tea spoon jeera
1 tea spoon haldi
Salt to taste
1/2 cup finely chopped coriander leaves
For Tadka
1 table spoon ghee
1 tea spoon mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon hing
1 strand curry leaves

Preparation:
  1. Wash and soak tuvar dal and moong dal together for  half  hours time
  2. Blend green chilies, jeera, coconut and garlic to a fine paste
  3. Add haldi to the dals and pressure cook for three whistles, adding twice the amount of water
  4. When pressure dies down open the cooker lid and mash the cooked dal lightly
  5. Heat the ghee in a pan and add mustard, curry leaves, hing.
  6. When mustard pops add the cooked and mashed dal, ground coconut masala, salt and bring it to a quick boil. Adjust the consistency of the dal by adding water as per your liking
  7. Garnish with coriander leaves 
  8. Serve with hot steamed rice
