This blog is aimed at those who love to cook simple home made food with minimum available ingredients.The style of recipes in this blog will be mostly Dakshina Kannada (Vegetarian) home made food. However I intend to share recipes other than authentic Dakshina Kannada cooking which include cuisines from Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Punjab...There is also something for those who like cuisine from across the sea.

Moong dal Halwa

Moong dal or split green gram halwa is a delicacy of Northern part of India.  This halwa is a  healthy, dish that can be made for any festival or occasion with minimum ingredients.

Ingredients: (serves four )
1 cup moong dal
1 1/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup ghee
1 tea spoon elachi powder
1/2 cup chopped assorted dry fruits
1/2 cup milk
1 /2 tea spoon saffron

Preparation:
  1. Soak moong dal for an hour
  2. Drain the water from the moong dal and grind coarsely  without adding water
  3. Heat 1/4 cup of ghee in a pan and roast the dry fruits till golden brown and remove.
  4. Add another 1/4 cup ghee to the same pan and add the ground moong dal paste and sauté over low flame till moong dal turns light golden and the raw smell of the moong dal is completely gone
  5. Add the milk, saffron  and cook for two minutes
  6. Add the sugar and keep stirring
  7. Add the remaining ghee and stir till ghee leaves the side of the pan
  8. Add the elachi powder and put off the flame
  9. Garnish with the roasted dry fruits
  10. Serve hot.
