Ammana adige mane in Kannada means mother's kitchen. This blog is aimed at those who love to cook simple home made food with minimum available ingredients.The style of recipes in this blog will be mostly Dakshina Kannada (Vegetarian) home made food. However I intend to share recipes other than authentic Dakshina Kannada cooking which include cuisines from Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Punjab...There is also something for those who like cuisine from across the sea.

Beetroot saaru (Beetroot rasam)

Beetroot saaru
Beetroot saaru makes a good appetiser on a cold day. It tastes great with rice too.It is a simple recipe with minimum ingredients.

Ingredients:
1/2 beetroot
1/4 cup fresh grated coocnut
6-7 red chillies
1 spoon jeera (cumin seeds)
1 table spoon tamarind extract
1 spoon jaggery
Haldi
3-4 pods of garlic
1/2 spoon mustard seeds
1 strand curry leaves
2 spoons oil
Salt to taste.

Preparation:
1.Peel and chop 1/2 beetroot to small pieces and boil till tender.
2. In a pan heat 1 spoon  oil and add jeera, red chillies and roast till jeera splits
3. Grind the roasted chillies, jeera , coconut and boiled beetroot to a fine paste adding enough water.
4. In a heavy bottom vessel put the ground paste, haldi, salt, jaggery ,tamrind extract and 3 cups of water and boil well.
5. Prepare vagarane (tadka) using 1 spoon oil,crushed garlic, mustard seeds and curry leaves . When  mustard splits ,add to the prepared beetroot rasam.
6. Serve hot with rice.

Salt to taste
